Two guys walking past that I tried to engage with – no thanks – we’ll be back in a bit. Understanding that not everyone wants to be pestered or may genuinely have places to go – or may not be interested in the topic at all.

An American lady was really interested in the project – fascinated in the history of the images. Would really like to see a project like this going ahead and celebrating the history of the area. When she first moved here, her daughter told her it was a mistake to move here, but now they both love it for the rich history that is around. In sharing the images with her, she then shared that there was a cross further back on the hoe promenade, where it was the site of the last public hanging spot.

This couple were sat where the viewpoint to the old pier was – both students one who was doing art and one who was doing history. They had relocated for Uni from elsewhere in the south coast. Both had positive reactions to the project – the lady was happy to be photographed interacting with the objects. From their respective interests, they were interested in the project and where it would be going, what I was doing with it next. This was a really positive first encounter, as they were both actively engaging with it.

There were 2 students that I spoke to, both first years, one studying law and one studying bio science. They have just moved to the area ‘great to see what the history of the area is’. They didn’t know about the pier that had once existed, is I told them about it and how it had been demolished due to damage. They popped down to see the signs that had been put up along the area of the walkway.

For the image of the verge, I spoke to a guy who was happy to chat, but said that he didn’t really have an interest in history. He said that he could see where people would be interested in how the area had changed – or not for the verge image.

He asked where it would be located, is this something that would be in the open or would you have to go somewhere else to see it. When I mentioned the other images that I was testing, he had a greater interest in the pier image and was asking more information about that

My Reflection

This project was a success with a clearly defined final piece experience. From the reviews of the final intervention, I can see that it provides my users with an experience that helps to add context and empathic understanding to their visit. I met the brief by creating an intervention within a space or spaces, that is responding to our need for identity . the aim was to enhance understanding and empathy for the area and how it has developed, and allowing the users the abiltity to step into the past and see themselves as part of the timeline of this place.

This project could evolve through the development of the imagery – currently using images from one online source, however the are a series of books in the box by an author Chris Robinson, one of which as an image of the pier on the front in early colour photography. It would stand to reason that reaching out to authors such as chris robinson that there may be a series of images that would be good candidates for this.
